Member for Malvern, Michael O’Brien MP, today announced that the City of Stonnington will be offered a $19,000 grant as part of the first round of funding under the Victorian Coalition Government’s $6 million four-year Streetlife program.
“The City of Stonnington is one of 32 councils and trader associations across Victoria that will be offered grants under Streetlife to support local initiatives aimed at revitalising trading activity in Malvern main street business districts,” said Mr O’Brien.
“The council will work in close consultation with the East Malvern Traders Association to deliver a series of practical, hands-on workshops to assist businesses with improving their visual merchandising, including window and point of sale dressing.
“This program is a great opportunity for Malvern business owners to improve foot traffic in the precinct by equipping businesses with the skills to run a successful co-operative promotion that leverages specific seasonal events.
“I congratulate the City of Stonnington on this vital project which will provide greater confidence for retailers throughout the municipality.”
Mr O’Brien said this round of Streetlife funding will distribute more than $500,000 over the next six to 12 months to assist councils and trader groups in working directly with small retail businesses to develop marketing strategies, new skills and online capabilities.
Councils are eligible for grants of up to $20,000 on an 80:20 co-funding basis, while business and trader associations qualify for up to $5,000. The individual grants are invested into new local projects tailored to the specific needs of retail businesses in community shopping precincts.
Mr O’Brien said that Malvern is known for its boutique shopping strips and booming retail community and the Government’s support of its businesses through the Streetlife grant will be an important boost for the local economy.
“By working in conjunction with the City of Stonnington, shopfront traders will have access to new tools and resources that they can adapt to build a stronger and more sustainable future for their business and the local community.”
