2012 STATE BUDGET: HOW IT BENEFITS MALVERN

2012 STATE BUDGET: HOW IT BENEFITS MALVERN
In the Victorian State Budget handed down on May 1 2012, a number of initiatives were announced which stand to benefit our local community.

Supporting Schools:

As part of $200 million announced for school capital works in the 2012/13 Budget, $10.5 million will be provided to nearby Ashwood Secondary College for the construction of new buildings, along with a further $200,000 for a feasibility study into a government secondary school in the Stonnington area. These announcements are both good news for local parents and students, in particular those looking for a local public option for secondary education.

“Choose Tap” Water Refill Station:

On May 8 2012, Michael O’Brien, the Member for Malvern, unveiled a new permanent fixture water refill station in Kooyong Park, together with Hawthorn star midfielder, Sam Mitchell, and Stonnington Mayor Cr John Chandler, in a bid to encourage the community to choose tap water over purchasing disposable plastic bottled water. Yarra Valley Water has also installed a second water refill station at Darling Park, Malvern.

Malvern Fire Brigade Facility Upgrades:

The Coalition Government continues to strengthen its support for safety in the community with funding of $8.01 million in the 2012/13 budget for the construction of a state of the art fire station to better serve the Malvern community. This important upgrade will enable Malvern fire fighters to provide even greater protection for Malvern residents and businesses.

East Malvern Terminus Village Speed Zone changes, 40km/h:

In the coming months, Malvern East residents in the vicinity of Waverley Road will benefit from the delivery of the Coalition Government’s commitment to introduce a safer speed limit around the East Malvern Terminus Village. The Village, popular with local residents including students and senior citizens, will see a 40 km/h speed limit introduced during busy periods to make the area safer for pedestrians and road users alike.
