FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR MULTICULTURAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS IN MALVERN
Two multicultural events in the Malvern electorate will share in $1,900 in funding from the Victorian Government following an announcement today from the Member for Malvern, Michael O’Brien.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras recently approved close to $500,000 in funding to community groups for festivals and events through the Community Grants Program.
Almost 300 Victorian organisations will receive funding for multicultural festivals and events held between now and January 2013.
The Chabad House of Malvern/Toorak is receiving funding towards Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and the Simchat Torah - Rejoicing the Toorah event.
“Through this funding, the Government supports a wide range of community festivals and events through metropolitan and regional Victoria,” Mr O’Brien said.
“It is important that our culturally and linguistically diverse communities are able to celebrate and share their heritage and traditions with all Victorians.”
The 2011 Census confirmed the multicultural nature of Victoria, with more than 46 per cent of Victorians either born overseas or having at least one parent born overseas.
Mr O’Brien said that Government’s support for festivals and events demonstrated its strong commitment to promoting respect and to showcasing Victoria’s cultural diversity.
“Our diverse culture, history and traditions can be showcased to create an even more cohesive and harmonious society,”
“These festivals provide the wider community with the opportunity to experience and celebrate Victoria’s credible diversity.”
