In a blow to open and transparent government, Labor and three Upper House crossbenchers have voted down the Liberal Nationals proposal for a COVID-19 oversight committee.
Animal Justice Party MP, Andy Meddick, Shooter and Fishers Party MP, Jeff Bourman and Transport Matters MP, Rod Barton once again teamed up with the Labor Government to vote against a non-government controlled Select Committee being convened to genuinely scrutinise the government’s response to the pandemic.
With the Government exerting extraordinary power and control over the lives of Victorians, and seeking to take on $25 billion of borrowings, these actions demanded proper Parliamentary scrutiny.
Comments attributable to the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, David Davis:
“These three crossbenchers have given the State Government permission to mark its own homework and deprived Victorians the oversight they deserve.
“Daniel Andrews is exerting extraordinary control over the lives of Victorians, and that power should have genuine oversight.”
