Joint statement on Eastern Freeway tragedy sentencing

Yesterday’s sentencing of Mohinder Singh over his involvement in the Eastern Freeway tragedy is a timely reminder of the dangers faced and sacrifices made by frontline Victoria Police officers and their families.

This heinous crime continues to deeply impact the Victoria Police family and thousands of everyday Victorians, and has again highlighted the importance of a robust, well-resourced criminal justice system.

It’s critical that the rights of victims are always properly considered, with the justice system empathetic and responsive to the needs of victims.

The current post COVID-19 court backlog presents an enormous challenge to justice and tackling this problem must be a key priority for the Government. Justice delayed is justice denied.

The Victorian community will forever remember the courage and sacrifice of the officers involved in this horrific incident.

Our deepest sympathies remain with the families of Lynette Taylor, Kevin King, Glen Humphris and Josh Prestney, and the broader Victoria Police family who have been through such a traumatic ordeal that no one should have to ever experience.
