Labor cover up on Westgate Tunnel delays – stalled tunnel completion time blow out

Transurban has today announced a new finish date of 2023 for the West Gate Tunnel, a project Labor declared in 2014 was “shovel ready”. It was initially slated to be finished by 2022.

Daniel Andrews and his Transport Infrastructure Minister must be the only people in Victoria who didn’t know that the West Gate Tunnel project was in trouble.

Jacinta Allan has had the whistle blown on her by the Transurban statement to the Stock Exchange this morning.

Andrews and Allan have repeatedly and implausibly, including in State Parliament, refused to concede the project was running late.

Toll payers, families and small businesses are still being slugged hard by increased tolls now on existing Transurban toll roads. These slugs are to pay for a project they may never use and is running late.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Transport Infrastructure, David Davis:

“Labor can’t manage major projects and can’t manage money. Everything Jacinta Allan touches has a cost blowout or serious mismanagement or both.

“Jacinta Allan promised this project would be delivered on time. It clearly won’t be with massive issues still remaining, including where to dump the toxic soil.

“Daniel Andrews and his incompetent Transport Infrastructure Minister either knew about the time blowout, and covered up, or they should have known.”
