Labor’s delays on bail laws and machete ban puts Victorians at risk

The Victorian Government’s ongoing reluctance to prioritise community safety continues, as it delays bail law changes and postpones the machete ban until September.

Every day that these laws are stalled, Victorians remain at risk.

Last night, Labor rejected the Liberals and Nationals’ amendments that would have made these laws stronger and commence sooner. Instead, the Government wanted to play politics and brand their bill as the “tough bail” bill – a move that was ultimately defeated.

Far from being “the toughest bail laws in the country”, Labor’s new bail laws are still weaker than those in place just 12 months ago.

Yesterday, we learned crime is at a 20-year high, with home invasions and violent offenses surging. The Liberals and Nationals are demanding immediate action to fast-track these laws and protect Victorians. But Labor is standing in the way.

Shadow Attorney-General, Michael O’Brien, said: “The delay in implementing stronger bail laws is unacceptable. Victorians deserve a justice system that prioritises their safety – not a government that drags its feet while crime surges to record levels. Labor’s inaction is putting our community at risk.”

Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick, added:  “Labor’s handling of the machete ban is a complete failure. Dangerous weapons remain on shelves, putting Victorians at risk. This Government is more focused on excuses than action, and the community is paying the price for their incompetence.”
