Liberal Nationals’ CBD proposal put into action

The Andrews Labor Government is finally implementing a Liberal Nationals’ tourism voucher initiative which was proposed in December 2020, to encourage tourists back into the city.

Three months ago, the Liberal Nationals saw the opportunity to boost tourism numbers in the CBD over the summer period and called for the government to immediately provide tourism vouchers. Now, there are fears Daniel Andrews may have missed the boat and left it too late, announcing $200 vouchers only yesterday.

The damage has already been done. Melbourne businesses have taken another hit with the third lockdown caused by the government’s botched hotel quarantine and contact tracing.

Hospitality, accommodation and tourist attractions were booked for a busy Valentine’s Day when suddenly the rug was ripped from underneath them with the surprise announcement of a snap lockdown across the whole of Victoria.

Snap lockdowns absolutely shoot businesses confidence. The impact this has on business operators and potential tourists is detrimental because of the continued uncertainty and threat of lockdown.

In December last year, $24 million was provided for regional tourism vouchers with CBD tourism operators left wanting. An extra $10 million across the state is not going to go far.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Sport, Cindy McLeish:

“There needs to be incentives to get people back into the CBD, but summer holidays are over, and kids are back to school.

“The Andrews Labor Government missed the ideal time to boost tourism into the CBD.

“The Liberal Nationals called for city-based travel vouchers months ago. We need to help hospitality, accommodation and tourism operators get back on their feet.”
