Major events crown risked by Labor’s crowd caps

Crowd numbers at major events run the risk of being capped by the Andrews Labor Government following Daniel Andrews’ failure to apply appropriate social distancing and crowd control at recent major sporting events in Melbourne.

The Andrews Labor Government should consider implementing innovative solutions like rapid testing at major events to ensure public safety and must release all public health advice relating to crowd numbers.

Melbourne was once known as the events capital, home to major sporting events and entertainment.

Under the Andrews Labor Government, Victoria has lost its crown as the world’s most liveable city as major events including the Grand Prix, the Phillip Island MotoGP, the 2020 AFL Grand Final, the 2020 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach have been cancelled or forced to move interstate.

Furthermore, concerns about restrictions on the purchase of food and drink at AFL games and sporting events, as well as further restrictions on crowd movements will further threaten Melbourne’s major events crown.

The Deloitte Access Economics report suggest it will take three and a half years for Melbourne CBD to recover to pre-COVID levels which is deeply concerning.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Sport, Cindy McLeish:

“We need to bring the city, once so vibrant, back to life and Labor doesn’t have a plan at the moment.

“Rapid testing has to be a key part of that plan. The technology is there. Along with quarantine hubs and bubbles we can make it happen. Melbourne must maintain its status as the Events Capital.

“Victorians deserve transparency and Daniel Andrews must release all public health advice on which major event crowd caps are based.”
