Statement from Shadow Minister for Police on metropolitan checkpoint breach

The apparent breach of a Victoria Police checkpoint around metropolitan Melbourne presents a clear threat to the health and safety of the community.

The Andrews Labor Government must take immediate action to ensure such breaches do not occur in the future.

Reports have indicated a female driver has been waved through a Victoria Police checkpoint after refusing to answer where she was travelling from and why she was attempting to leave metropolitan Melbourne.

Alarmingly, the woman claims to have been reading from a script explaining the exact phrases people attempting to pass through police checkpoints should use when stopped.

In early July, Daniel Andrews described these checkpoints as a “hard boundary” that “is not breached by people who should not be leaving metropolitan Melbourne”.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick:

“Daniel Andrews must urgently provide Victoria Police with the powers and resources that are necessary for the operation of these checkpoints.

“Labor must not allow Victorians to flagrantly ignore the rules and place the health and safety of the community at risk.”
