Statement on the appointment of a new IBAC Commissioner

The Victorian Liberals and Nationals note the Labor Government’s appointment of Victoria Elliott as the new Commissioner of Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC).

Responding to the announcement Shadow Attorney-General Michael O’Brien said: “I congratulate Ms Elliott on her appointment as IBAC Commissioner and wish her well.

“Unlike her predecessors, Ms Elliott is neither a retired judge nor a senior barrister.

“Nevertheless, Victorians will look to the IBAC Commissioner to take a strong stand against public sector corruption and serious police misconduct in Victoria.

“Victoria desperately needs a corruption watchdog, not a government lapdog.

“With a nine-year-old Labor Government politicising institutions in this state, Victorians depend on IBAC taking a strong stand against corruption and the abuse of power.

“Time will tell. And Victorians will be watching.”
