Win for charities as Labor pressured on tax hike

Victorian charities have had a much-needed win after the Andrews Labor Government was pressured into providing relief from a massive hike in the Bin Tax.

Hardworking charities, such as the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria, were faced with being penalised hundreds of thousands of dollars more in tax at the worst possible time, as a result of the government’s Municipal and Industrial Landfill Levy increasing by 60 per cent from 1 July 2021.

However, after advocacy by the Victorian Liberal Nationals this callous move has been squashed, securing an increase in the landfill levy relief for charities funding in the 2021-22 State Budget.

Charities also play an important role helping to tackle Victoria’s waste crisis, diverting over 158,000 tonnes of waste from landfill in Victoria by repurposing products to help people in need. This contributes significantly to Victoria’s circular economy, with reuse being a critical aspect to improving waste outcomes in our state.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Bridget Vallence:

The last thing charities like the Salvos and Vinnies needed right now was to be slugged with a whopping 60 per cent Bin Tax increase.

“After pressure by the Liberal Nationals, this callous Bin Tax grab has been squashed.

“It’s a massive win for charities who will now have more money for important programs to help the most vulnerable people in our community.”
