ABS Labour Force figures released today paint a grim picture for job losses in Victoria on the back of efforts to suppress COVID-19.
Victoria’s unemployment rate for April 2020 increased to 6.0 per cent, up from 5.2 per cent in March 2020.
Compared to the previous month the number of people employed in Victoria dropped by 127,100 in April 2020.
This fall is the largest single-month fall in employed persons in Victoria on record.
The previous largest single month fall in employed persons was 38,000 in March 1991, at the height of the ‘recession Australia had to have’.
Every Victorian who has experienced one of these job losses was working and financially contributing to our shared prosperity only months ago.
Now more than ever, Daniel Andrews needs to provide our state with an economic plan to get Victorians back to work and back in business.
