Statement on tragic teen murder and youth violence in Deer Park

Reports a Melbourne teenager has been violently killed outside of a shopping centre are yet another tragic reminder of Victoria’s youth crime crisis.

Yesterday afternoon, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death by a group of 8 to 10 youths carrying knives and baseball bats during a brawl outside the Brimbank Shopping Centre in Deer Park.

Under Daniel Andrews, youth crime continues to worsen with 15-19 years olds are now the largest cohort of offenders in cases of violent crimes against the person.

The Victorian Liberal Nationals have long called for further proactive measures to keep young Victorians on the right path and out of a life of crime, including policies such as Police in Schools.

This tragic death and violet street attack involving teenagers is another failure to address spiralling youth offending that is creating the next generation of hardened violent criminals.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police and Community Safety, David Southwick:

“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the violent youth crime crisis in Victoria and without action is a clear threat to our community safety now and into the future.

“Daniel Andrews’ more of the same approach to young offenders simply isn’t good enough and Labor must get serious about tackling violent youth crime.

“The Victorian Liberal Nationals support positive policies that keep at-risk youth on the right path and builds respect for police and community.”
